St. Charles Sheens September PR

Marcos Cantu is having an adequate season, but many analysts in St. Charles feel this is the 30-year-old's final days with the Sheens. Cantu has spent his entire pro career in the St. Charles system, since signing a minor league contract as a free agent when he was just a teenager.

Cantu split time between single A Surrey and AA Culver City in 2014, before spending the next three seasons in Surrey to work on his mechanics at the plate. He ended 2017 in Culver City and all of 2018 in AAA Vancouver, where he showed enough poise to get a spring training invite in 2019 for the Sheens. He raised eyebrows during spring training and earned a spot on the major league roster. In his rookie season, he hit only .231 but contributed with 34 doubles, four triples, 15 HRs and 55 stolen bases. His best season with the Sheens came in 2022, when he hit .277, had an OBP of .349, a slug of .504 with 29 doubles, four triples, 19 HRs and drove in 79 RBIs to go along with 30 stolen bases.

He was a member of the 2024 Sheens roster that won the BSA championship, and was a key contributor during the playoffs, as he hit .333 in eight games, smacking two doubles and a HR, driving in five runs while scoring six runs. He also stole an impressive six bases. However, he opted to become a free agent after the season, and the Sheens brought him back days before the 2025 season started. The team made the playoffs but Cantu was ineffective during the playoffs, hitting only .182 in four games.

Cantu has never been able to find his mojo that he was known for early in his career. In this, likely his final season with the Sheens, he's shown flashes of brilliance. As a number 2 or 3 hitter, Cantu has hit the laces off the ball, hitting eight of his 12 HRs this season. For some odd reason, he's also felt comfortable in the number 8 hole.

Cantu will end his St. Charles career with average numbers, but fans will always remember him as a gritty player who never feared trying to generate excitement, be it attempting to steal third base with two outs or diving for a sinking line drive while the Sheens were ahead by eight runs in the ninth inning. Wherever your career takes you, Marcos, remember that thousands of St. Charles fans thank you for your time with the Sheens.
