Vista April PR - Opening Week 'round the Minors

Pacific Coast League (AAA)
9 players had 2 HR games -
Fernando Ortiz (Chicago), Will Lott (Chicago), Hector Soto (Chicago), Miguel Perez (Austin), Morgan Wright (Vista), Hamilton Hollbrook (Seattle), Irwin Duncan (San Francisco), Daniel Roberts (St. Charles)
3 sets of these 2 HR’s came in the Vancouver Vipers (St. Charles) vs. Albuquerque Isotopes (Chicago) game on April 8th. The final score was 23-12, Alburquerque.
International League (AAA)
Kalamazoo pitching prospect Gary Grimes of the Belleville 83’s did some MAJOR work against the El Dorado affiliate Birmingham Barons on April 8th. He struck out 14 batters in just 16 innings. Let me repeat. 14k. 6 IP.  He only struck out the side one time. The first inning. The 83’s pulled out a 3-1 win.
Eastern League (AA)
The Rio Grande Rattlesnake (Plymouth) are the only undefeated team remaining in the Eastern League. In fact, the next closest teams are .571 with 4-3 records.  In addition to the small sample size skewing the stats, The Rattlesnake have gotten pretty lucky too. They’ve won 3 1-run games, 2 2-run games, and then won their last two games by 5 and then 3 runs.
Northwestern League (AA)
5 of the 12 top pitching performances this week came from San Diego Smashers (Vista) starters. #1) Manuel Gonzalez pitched a complete game 1 hitter against the Riverside Red Bulls (So Cal). #3) Robert Carillo struck out 10 in 6.1 against the Red Bulls. #5) Craig Lewis struck out 5 in 7 giving up 1 run and 2 hits, also against the Red Bulls. #10) Sloan Sanders struck out 8 in 6 giving up 1 run against the… you guessed it.. Red Bulls. #12) Craig Lewis struck out 9 in 5 giving up 1 against Bismarck (Kansas City). Bismarck also produced some good pitching, landing 5 in the top 25 performances. However only one of those was in the top 12.
Southern League (AA)
Alan McGilroy of the Memphis Blues (San Francisco) came real close to a cycle in a 4-5 loss to the West Virginia Power (Chicago), also on April 8th. He only needed a 3B to complete the feat. He has one already this season, unfortunately it came 2 days too soon. McGilroy is going crazy right now. In 31 PA’s he has a slash of .500/.613/.792). Ballin.
Appalachian League (A)
Every other higher minor league has had multiple 2 HR games within the past week. The Appalachian league has had 0. You’d think there was amazing pitching to counter but not so much. There was only 2 shutouts and 0 complete games. Hitters hit .281/.376/.397. Defense has been atrocious in the Appalachian league. The league’s total is -15.3 (compared to 1.6 for the BSA, or -4.6 for the AA Southern League).
Midwest League (A)
No 2 HR games in the Midwest league either but there was a 5-5 performance from Paco Cordova of the Cincinnati Pride (Boston). The 5-5 was an amazing feat. But it was an actually an encore of his 4-5 1HR performance the day before. Dude went 9-10 with a HR and 7 RBI in 2 games.
Pioneer League (A)
The Chula Vista Tacos are the only undefeated team remaining in the Pioneer League. They are currently top 1 in all batting stats except walks, OBP and K’s. They are top 4in all pitching stats except home runs allowed. 2027 2nd rounder, Arthur MacDonald was player of the week, going 10-28 with 1 HR, 3 BB, 1 3B, 4SB & 11 RBI. 2027 4th rounder Ethan Shaw, joined the 2 HR minor league club on opening day against the Eau Claire Esquires (KcK). Jake Reeves, who struggled initially in the Pioneer League last year before finding his groove late season showed a lot more comfort to start the year this time around. Reeves collected 11 hits in 30 AB to go along with a HR, 6 RBI and 4 BB.
