A look back at the most valuable contracts handed out this offseason. 12 deals were handed out totaling $20M or more.
1. LF Dante Owens, VIS $111M, 7 years
Owens is the big winner here, getting the highest AAV and the most years for a whopping $111 million commitment. Owens has been consistently great though, and at age 27 he's still in his prime window which will hep Vista replace Bird's bat in the lineup. He also has an opt out after year 3, and could very well be back on the free agent market at age 30.
2. SP Etieene Garcia, NEW $56M, 4 years
Another former NFF star, Garcia is coming off a season that was cut short by injury, but he still performed well enough to earn himself a raise. He should aid a pitching staff of a New Orleans team with championship hopes.
3. SP Eduardo Trujillo. FRE $52.5M, 6 years
Fresno needed pitching. One of the best offensive teams just couldn't go all way. and they made the move to acquire the 28 year old former 84 to get it done.
4. SP Hiroshige Yamada, AUS $47.5M, 5 years
Austin was near the bottom of the league last year, but that didn't stop them from making a big splash. The 5'11" "Tall One" will slot in behind standout Troy "Wildfire" Lynn, and hopes to make Austin a competitive squad this season.
5. SP Nelson Ortega, FRE $45.61M, 4 years
Fresno REALLY needed pitching.
6. RF Seung-woo Yi, SNF $37M, 5 years
San Francisco made a few moves this offseason, but the biggest one is Yi. The aging outfielder has had an up and down career, but brings provides stable defense in the outfield.
7. CF Bob Ware, STL $27.9M, 3 years
In a curious move, after trading for CF Robin Hill last offseason, the Browns brought in the oft injured Ware to provide depth in the outfield, and you couldn't ask for a better defensive sub.
8. CL Kuang-yin Yue, ELD $27.5M, 5 years
The former Irvine closer signed with El Dorado to anchor the bullpen.
9. C Run-ming Zhu, NEW $25.5M, 3 years
Along with a new starting pitcher, the Looters also added one of the best defensive catchers in the game.
10. C Owen Carter, SNF $24.5M, 4 years
The Bandits needed an upgrade at catcher after rookie Miguel Mendoza struggled mightily. Carter brings reputation, stability and leadership to a team that needs it.
11. RP Guan-cai Yong, NAS $24.45M, 5 years
Yong is a relative unknown coming over from Taiwan, but the scouts love him. He is a hard thrower with a plus-plus cutter and change.
12. CF Kenji Kudo, NAS $20.75M, 4 years
Another unknown, this time from Japan, Kudo brings top notch defensive ability and average offense.
